Marking a first for Gujarat’s capital, the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered traffic signal system on a major city route to improve traffic movement and strengthen road safety measures.
The advanced signal system has been installed at Happiness Circle, situated below the metro bridge on the Bhaiyapura Bridge–PDEU–GNLU–GIFT City road, one of Gandhinagar’s key traffic corridors.
Officials said the AI-enabled technology can analyse real-time traffic volume and automatically change signal timings accordingly, helping reduce long vehicle queues and unnecessary delays. Unlike traditional traffic lights that operate on fixed intervals, the smart system gives longer green signals to heavily crowded lanes while reducing wait times on less busy roads.
Authorities believe the move will help control congestion, improve commuting efficiency and lower the chances of road accidents. The system is also equipped with digital traffic enforcement features that can identify violations and generate penalty notices automatically.
Traffic police officials said the project is currently being tested on a pilot basis and the initial response has been positive.
Considering the changing traffic patterns in Gandhinagar during rush hours, officials feel the AI-based system could play a major role in improving overall traffic management in the city.
If the pilot project delivers consistent results, similar smart traffic signal systems may be introduced at other busy junctions across Gandhinagar in the coming months.
