Over 10,000 vehicle owners in Ahmedabad have faced penalties for illegal parking in the last four months, with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) collecting Rs 2.57 crore in fines across its seven zones. The highest amount, Rs 82 lakh, was recovered from the North-West Zone. Overall, 10,598 vehicles were penalised during the drive.
The AMC’s Estate Department has also continued its action against encroachments and roadside obstructions. Till April 25 this year, officials removed 6,887 larries and cleared garbage accumulations from different areas of the city. In addition, nearly 25,089 illegal hoardings and banners were taken down.
The intensified action comes after the Gujarat High Court directed the municipal commissioner to identify at least one road in Ahmedabad that is entirely free from encroachments. Following the court’s remarks, the municipal commissioner held a review meeting on Wednesday with officials from all seven zones and instructed them to maintain strict enforcement to keep roads obstruction-free.
Despite the crackdown, larries and garbage piles have reportedly resurfaced at several spots, prompting concerns over how effective and long-lasting the enforcement measures truly are.
