Ahmedabad is in for a sweltering May, according to new forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). If April’s heat felt unbearable, residents should prepare for even higher temperatures this month.
IMD’s long-range forecast reveals that not only will daytime highs be above normal across much of Gujarat, but nighttime temperatures will also remain elevated. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the IMD’s Director General of Meteorology, noted that “minimum temperatures are expected to remain above normal across large parts of the country during May.”
Most areas in Gujarat will likely see maximum temperatures rise, particularly in peninsular Saurashtra and south Gujarat where minimum temps are set to climb significantly. However, some locations in northeastern Gujarat might escape the worst of it.
Heatwave conditions are anticipated in various regions including Saurashtra and Kutch and parts of central and south Gujarat. Officials warn that these increases could lead to intensified heat stress among residents.
Interestingly, April saw a mix of weather patterns across India with most places experiencing normal to below-normal maximum temperatures. But southern peninsular districts recorded higher-than-average heat. The IMD attributed these fluctuations to several Western Disturbances influencing weather conditions.
On another note, rainfall predictions for May indicate above-normal precipitation across many parts of India—including most areas in Gujarat—though some places in east and northeast regions may experience below-normal rain levels.
Mohapatra added that the southwest monsoon could arrive over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 14-16. As summer intensifies, locals are urged to stay hydrated and take precautions against rising temperatures.
