A rapid increase in the number of vehicles in Ahmedabad is putting growing pressure on the city’s road infrastructure, raising concerns of worsening congestion if capacity is not expanded in time.
According to data from regional transport offices, nearly 2.77 lakh new vehicles are added to the city each year. In just the first three months of 2026, over 85,000 vehicles have already been registered, suggesting that the annual figure may soon exceed three lakh.Data from the Subhash Bridge and Vastral RTOs indicate that more than 11.04 lakh vehicles—including two-wheelers, cars, auto-rickshaws and heavy vehicles—have been added over the past four years. However, infrastructure development has not kept pace with this surge. Only a limited number of roads have been constructed or upgraded, while several key projects remain delayed. In some cases, newly developed roads have quickly proven inadequate due to rising traffic volumes.Urban planners warn that without long-term strategies and timely expansion of road capacity, Ahmedabad could face chronic congestion.
The shortage of flyovers, underpasses, parking facilities and efficient traffic management systems has already resulted in frequent bottlenecks across major and internal roads. While authorities continue to highlight select stretches as “model” or “iconic” roads, residents say the broader network remains under strain.
Experts caution that without comprehensive measures—such as road widening, better traffic regulation and infrastructure upgrades—the city’s roads could eventually resemble parking lots due to the overwhelming number of vehicles.
