Vantara, founded by Anant Ambani, has announced the launch of Vantara University in Jamnagar — the world’s first integrated global university dedicated to wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences.
The proposed institution will focus on animal welfare, scientific advancement, and the future of conservation, aiming to train the next generation of professionals in veterinary medicine, wildlife care, and environmental protection. Its curriculum is expected to draw from India’s traditional knowledge systems while adopting a forward-looking, purpose-driven approach to education.
Speaking on the initiative, Ambani said the future of conservation depends on building institutions that combine compassion, knowledge, and technical expertise. He noted that the idea for the university emerged from his personal experiences with distressed animals and the need to strengthen capabilities in their care. Inspired by the legacy of Nalanda University and the philosophy of welcoming knowledge from all directions, the university aims to nurture a new generation committed to protecting all forms of life.
The foundation ceremony, conducted in accordance with Hindu traditions, brought together experts from academia, science, conservation, and public life, along with Ambani’s mentors. Symbolic elements such as soil, water, and stones sourced from diverse ecosystems across India — including forests, grasslands, wetlands, deserts, and Himalayan regions — were used to mark the foundation, reflecting the country’s ecological diversity.
Vantara University will bring together multiple disciplines within a single academic ecosystem, combining real-world conservation practices with formal education. Leveraging Vantara’s field experience, the institution aims to translate on-ground knowledge into academic programmes, professional training, and globally relevant research frameworks.
The university plans to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and specialised programmes in areas such as wildlife medicine and surgery, nutrition, behavioural sciences, genetics, epidemiology, One Health, conservation policy, and natural habitat design. It will also provide scholarships to support students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Supported by advanced academic and clinical infrastructure, international collaborations, and a residential campus, the university will focus on research-driven, action-oriented learning. Its model will integrate in situ and ex situ conservation approaches, linking natural habitats with scientific care and long-term wildlife management.
Officials said the initiative is designed to strengthen conservation education both inside classrooms and in the field. Alongside the launch, programmes such as the ‘Vantara University Founding Fellows’ and ‘Every Life Matters’ scholarships were also announced.
With this initiative, Vantara positions the university as more than an academic institution — aiming to create a long-term platform for education, research, and innovation, while reinforcing the idea that wildlife conservation requires not just awareness, but trained expertise and systemic support.
