Major infrastructure works on SG Highway, including new flyovers and bridge expansion, are set to be completed by the end of the year, offering relief to thousands of commuters.
The flyover from Nirma University to Gota and the widening of the Narmada canal flyover are expected to be ready by July-end. Meanwhile, the flyover connecting YMCA Club to Karnavati Club is likely to be completed by December.
The state government has launched these projects to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The overall SG Highway development is estimated at around ₹1,000 crore, as these stretches witness heavy daily traffic between the twin cities. Ongoing construction has caused major congestion, with travel time stretching to 40–45 minutes during peak hours.
Officials said the highway will be transformed into a six-lane, signal-free corridor by removing 10 cuts and eight traffic signals, and replacing them with U-turns to ensure smoother traffic flow.
The upgraded highway will have three lanes on each side and is planned as an iconic road. Service roads will also be improved by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation with facilities like footpaths, tree plantations, kiosks, cycle tracks, toilets, and EV charging stations.
In addition, the Narmada canal bridge between Bhat Circle in Ahmedabad and Koba Circle in Gandhinagar will be widened to 12 lanes. Two parallel bridges, each around 1,000 metres long and 15 metres wide, will be constructed to improve connectivity towards SVP International Airport. The project is estimated to cost ₹37.33 crore.
For construction within the canal, a specialised pontoon method will be used, involving floating platforms to support heavy-duty piling and ensure a strong foundation.
