Tension rose at the Model Hostel (KGBV) in Tharad as around 250 students staged a protest on Monday against the appointment of new warden Ashaben. Raising slogans, students gathered inside the hostel and demanded her removal.
Students alleged that during her previous tenure, Ashaben behaved harshly, used abusive language, and mentally and physically harassed them over small issues. They also claimed that her family members would visit the hostel and trouble students.
For the past year, Sonalben was serving as warden, and students say they felt safe under her. Her transfer and Ashaben’s return have led to anger among students.
Parents also joined the protest, accusing Ashaben of corruption and mismanagement in the past. They cited complaints about poor food quality, insects in meals, and misuse of supplies, questioning her reappointment.
Despite ongoing exams, students remain firm on their demands — removal of Ashaben, bringing back Sonalben or appointing a new warden, and an inquiry into the district gender officer who has reportedly not visited the hostel for months.
Students have warned of boycotting exams and starting a hunger strike if action is not taken soon. Local officials are trying to resolve the situation.
