A well-known restaurant in Navrangpura, 1944 The Hocco Kitchen, has come under scrutiny after a customer allegedly discovered a cockroach in food served to his family. The incident has triggered public outrage, especially as a one-year-old child had already consumed part of the dish.
The complainant, Varun Doshi, said he ordered a bowl of dal khichdi worth ₹479. While feeding his infant son, he noticed a cockroach in the meal. He immediately informed the restaurant staff and recorded the incident through photos and videos, later sharing them on social media.
Acting on an online complaint, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Food Department conducted an inspection. According to department head Dr. Tejas Shah, officials visited the restaurant and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
A representative of the restaurant, identified as Keshavbhai, acknowledged the lapse and said an internal investigation is underway. He also confirmed that AMC officials had already inspected the premises.
Despite the penalty, the family and several locals have demanded stricter action, raising concerns over public health and hygiene standards. Doshi has urged authorities to consider cancelling the restaurant’s licence, questioning how such lapses could occur at a reputed establishment.
