Despite repeated efforts like notices and repainting, the problem of mava spitting continues to dirty public spaces in Surat.
Taking a strict step, the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) has imposed a complete ban on mava—a mixture of betelnut, catechu, and tobacco—across its premises. Those found violating the rule will face penalties, and repeat offenders may have their photos displayed publicly.
SDB president Arvind Shah said there will be zero tolerance, and carrying, chewing, or spitting mava—even inside washrooms—is strictly prohibited. Authorities are also considering installing surveillance cameras to enforce the rules.
The move comes as the government pushes diamond traders to shift their operations to the bourse. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has also held meetings with traders to speed up the process.
SDB vice-chairman Lalji Patel said strict rules are already being followed within firms like Dharmanandan Diamond.
The Surat Diamond Bourse, inaugurated in December 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is now focusing on making all its 4,200 offices fully operational.
