Two years after Surat Airport was granted international status, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has begun the process to set up duty-free shops at Surat International Airport.
A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued for the design, development, operation, and maintenance of these outlets within the customs area of the terminal. The move follows the inauguration of the new terminal on December 17, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and aims to bring Surat Airport in line with global standards.
Airport Director A N Sharma said the duty-free shops are likely to become operational within four to five months. Two outlets are planned—one in the departure area and another in arrivals. Passengers will be able to shop for items such as liquor, tobacco, cosmetics, chocolates, electronics, jewellery, and select “Made in India” products, as permitted under customs rules.
The initiative has been welcomed by residents and industry representatives, who believe it will boost the airport’s international appeal. Business community members said duty-free facilities will offer greater convenience to foreign travellers visiting Surat’s diamond and textile hubs, while also improving the overall passenger experience.
