After permitting liquor sales in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, the Gujarat government is now planning to allow a licensed liquor outlet in Porbandar — the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi — exclusively for permit holders, marking a significant shift.
Until now, permit holders in Porbandar had to travel to other cities to purchase liquor. Sources said a local hotel has been granted permission to operate a liquor shop, with sales likely to begin from April 1, coinciding with the new financial year.
Though there has been no official confirmation, sources indicated that the approval process has been completed and preparations are underway.
The hotel management has not confirmed or publicly acknowledged receiving the nod.
The development has sparked debate locally and on social media, given Porbandar’s association with Mahatma Gandhi and Gujarat’s long-standing prohibition policy.
Earlier, similar proposals by private establishments were reportedly rejected due to local opposition.
