Ahmedabad’s Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) took decisive action on March 30, 2026, by demolishing two significant religious structures that were obstructing the construction of the Vishala–Sarkhej elevated corridor. The mosque and Haji Bawani Dargah in Juhapura were cleared as part of an ongoing initiative to facilitate highway development.
The operation was carried out in Election Ward No. 34 (Maktampura) after AMC officials confirmed compliance with the Town Planning (TP) Act. “We’re focusing on clearing all obstacles along the TP road required for this crucial infrastructure project,” said an AMC spokesperson.
Earlier, occupants had sought intervention from the Gujarat High Court. In a ruling dated December 23, 2025, the court mandated that encroachments be voluntarily removed within two months. Following that directive, AMC had previously cleared numerous residential and commercial buildings in the area but left one mosque and the dargah until now.
On Monday, with police assistance from Vejalpur Police Station and using specialized equipment like an anti-encroachment vehicle and JCB machine alongside about twenty laborers from a private contractor, both structures were finally demolished.
Officials indicated that this clearance drive isn’t over yet; it will continue over the coming days to ensure smooth progress on the infrastructural developments along this critical route.
