Ahmedabad’s ambitious electric bus rollout has exposed serious planning gaps, with Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani raising concerns during a review meeting over the lack of charging infrastructure for the proposed fleet.
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had announced the induction of 1,970 electric buses under AMTS and BRTS by the end of 2027. However, when the commissioner asked Transport Manager R L Pandey about the availability of charging stations, he said preparations were underway, drawing sharp criticism from the civic chief.
Expressing dissatisfaction, the commissioner directed officials to begin concrete planning immediately, stressing that such large-scale projects cannot move forward without proper infrastructure. He also pointed out that with major future commitments, including preparations for large events, such gaps are unacceptable.
The meeting flagged concerns in other departments as well. Officials were told not to merely declare heatwave hotspots but to ensure drinking water and ORS reach affected areas. The health department was also questioned on measures to tackle air pollution and improve drainage connectivity.
Additionally, officials failed to provide clear details when asked about nearly 1,400 construction sites. Directions were issued to inspect stormwater infrastructure across the city.
The review meeting highlighted significant lapses in planning and coordination, particularly in Ahmedabad’s transition to electric public transport.
