So like, there’s this major shake-up happening with the school meal program in Gujarat. The state just decided to cut sukhdi from the mid-day meals for students—which, honestly, kinda feels like a big deal. This change impacts almost 38.5 lakh kids in about 32,230 government schools across the state!
And guess what? They’re saying all of this is ’cause of the Centre’s ‘Fit India’ initiative—so they’re pushing for healthier eating habits among children. Honestly? Makes sense if you think about it.
Sukhdi is this traditional dish made from wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee (which sounds delicious, right?), but it’s being replaced because a review committee recommended cutting down on oil and fats. It was only added to the meal plan back in March 2024 to boost nutrition—now it’s getting booted after just a tiny bit of time!
But wait—there’s more! Back in November 2024, they kicked off the Mukhyamantri Poshan Alpahar Yojana which aimed at improving and diversifying what kids eat at school. Some of those new snacks included things like chana chaat and even a millet version of sukhdi.
Now, under their revised list for meals, students can look forward to things like moong chaat, vegetable poha (yum!), mixed pulses chaat (sounds healthy!), millet sukhdi (a twist on the classic), and veggie upma. Totally different vibe now while still trying to keep it balanced according to health guidelines.
