As March settles in, Ahmedabad is feeling the heat. Temperatures have soared past 40°C, prompting Kankaria Zoo to implement special measures to safeguard its residents from the sweltering conditions.
Under the supervision of zoo superintendent Dr. RK Shah, the facility has launched a summer management plan aimed at protecting animals and birds from heat-related stress. The initiative includes installing industrial coolers strategically placed near enclosures housing lions, tigers, leopards, and elephants.
To create a more comfortable environment, these coolers help maintain temperatures inside cages at least 1 to 2°C lower than outside. Additionally, water tanks remain filled for creatures that thrive in moisture-rich environments such as crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
But hydration is key during this intense heat. The zoo has fortified drinking water with a mix of ORS and electrolyte powder to help animals retain essential salts. Their diets have also been fine-tuned; now they’re enjoying refreshing treats like watermelon and sweet potato.
And there’s more for the feathered inhabitants. A green netting has been installed over bird cages to shield them from direct sunlight while cooling foggers intermittently spray mist throughout their habitat.
The medical staff works tirelessly as well. They monitor each animal’s health closely so any issues can be addressed immediately. With these thoughtful measures in place, Kankaria Zoo is doing everything possible to keep its wildlife safe during this harsh season.
