Ahmedabad is witnessing a major crackdown on illegal white LED lights used in vehicles. In just over two months, the Ahmedabad Regional Transport Office (RTO) has fined more than 1,000 motorists.
The initiative comes as part of a directive from the State Transport Commissioner aimed at combating the increasing number of road accidents in Gujarat. The RTO is collaborating with local police for special night drives targeting key areas like Zundal Circle and SG Highway.
During these operations, officials have noted that fines collected are nearly on par with the total penalties imposed throughout all of 2025. From January 1 to March 10 this year, drivers faced penalties exceeding ₹10 lakh for using illegal lighting. This figure is almost identical to last year’s total collection of ₹10.90 lakh from about 1,090 drivers.
“This shows how prevalent the issue is,” said RTO officer Nirav Bakshi. He added that a list of repeat offenders has been compiled and enforcement efforts will ramp up further. If caught again using these lights, offenders might even face licence suspensions.
The crackdown also extends its reach beyond individual drivers; dealers and garages selling or installing these illegal lights have been warned as well.
As the city continues to address this pressing traffic safety issue, more joint checking drives are expected in the coming days to ensure compliance and promote safer road conditions for everyone.
