Subhash Bridge Set for Major Renovation, Expected to Reopen in Nine Months

The Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad, recently closed due to structural cracks, is gearing up for extensive restoration. Civic authorities approved a ₹236 crore tender, and officials say work could wrap up within nine months.

According to the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the bridge’s existing structure will be completely dismantled and replaced with a new steel composite girder construction. The foundation will also see significant enhancements. D R Agarwal Infracon has been awarded the contract, and officials indicated that a work order would be issued shortly.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mirant Parikh shared details about the project, noting that the renovated bridge is projected to remain stable for at least 70 years. The current layout includes five spans measuring 76.25 meters and two shorter spans at 36.50 meters, totaling a length of 454 meters and a width of 18 meters.

The new design plans call for each span to increase to 38 meters. This change aims to lessen the load on the existing well foundation while boosting its overall capacity.

But that’s not all. The project also includes plans for two additional two-lane bridges on either side of the current span, which are expected to be completed within two years. Each will feature an eye-catching steel façade complete with modern lighting.

Officials emphasized that while strengthening the foundations of existing piers, they’ll construct new ones using robust pile foundations ranging from 1500 mm to 1800 mm in diameter. Before any construction begins, the structural design has to receive approval from the R&B Design Circle.
