Ahmedabad’s public transport is set for a significant upgrade. The city will add 1,000 electric buses to its AMTS and BRTS services under the PM e-Drive scheme.
In total, 600 nine-metre and 100 twelve-metre electric buses will bolster the AMTS fleet. Meanwhile, the BRTS service will get an additional 300 twelve-metre buses.
The allocation process has already kicked off. Officials granted approval during a recent meeting of Janmarg Limited to bring in these air-conditioned electric buses over a two-year span, starting in phases from 2026 through 2027.
This move aligns with the Centre’s goal of promoting cleaner transportation solutions across major cities. The Ministry of Heavy Industries organized a joint tender process that ultimately led to Ahmedabad being awarded these new vehicles under the PM e-Drive initiative.
According to local authorities, the procurement of these buses will follow a Gross Cost Contract model. For operational costs, the nine-metre AC electric buses are estimated at ₹51.50 per kilometre while their twelve-metre counterparts will run at ₹60.80 per kilometre.
