The (UGC), a statutory body under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, has identified 32 institutions operating as fake universities across the country. The Commission has warned that degrees issued by these entities are invalid for employment and higher education.
Delhi accounts for the highest number of such institutions, with 12 entities, followed by Uttar Pradesh and several other states. Students have been advised to verify the recognition status of institutions before taking admission.
The UGC clarified that these institutions lack recognition from either the Central Government or any State Government. Referring to Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, the notice emphasised that only institutions established under a Central Act, State Act, or those deemed to be universities are authorised to award degrees. Any qualification granted by unrecognised bodies holds no legal validity.
