Cars Banned from Tragad Underpass; Two-Wheelers Allowed, Traffic Diverted

In Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has barred cars from using the Tragad underpass on the Sardar Patel Ring Road to reduce congestion and improve commuter safety. The underpass will now be used only by two-wheelers, while cars will be diverted via the Jhundal Bridge route.

Officials said frequent traffic jams were reported on the stretch between Jhundal Bridge and the Tragad underpass, especially during peak hours. The narrow underpass, handling traffic from both directions, often caused bottlenecks and delays for local commuters, many of whom travel by two-wheelers.

Light motor vehicles will now pass under Jhundal Bridge instead of using the Tragad underpass. Authorities noted that the existing underpass is only 4 metres wide and 3 metres high, making it unsuitable for mixed traffic.

As part of future development along the ring road corridor, the underpass will be rebuilt and widened to 12 metres with a height of 4 metres. Once completed, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars will be able to pass smoothly, easing congestion in the area. Until then, motorists have been urged to follow the diversion and cooperate for smoother traffic movement.
