AMTS Raises 2026–27 Budget by 45%, Pushes for Electric Buses and Green Mobility

The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has presented a ₹991 crore budget for the financial year 2026–27, marking a 45% increase from the ₹682 crore allocated in 2025–26. The enhanced outlay focuses on modernising the city’s public transport system while making it more environment-friendly and passenger-oriented.

Of the total budget, ₹958 crore has been earmarked for revenue expenditure and ₹33 crore for capital expenditure. AMTS expects to generate an income of ₹358 crore during the year, while the budget also includes a ₹600 crore loan from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Salary, pension, and other establishment-related expenses are estimated at ₹347 crore.

A key highlight of the budget is AMTS’s commitment to converting its entire bus fleet into electric and air-conditioned vehicles by 2030. In line with this goal, the transport body plans to expand its fleet to 1,600 buses in 2026–27.

Currently, AMTS has a total fleet of 1,571 buses and aims to operate 1,492 buses on regular days to significantly enhance operational capacity. As part of its transition from CNG to electric vehicles, AMTS plans to procure 225 electric buses, of which 25 have already been delivered.

The budget also proposes surveys to improve bus frequency and introduce new routes in nearby villages and GIDC areas. In addition, AMTS plans to launch special bus services to heritage and tourism destinations during the year. Another major proposal includes the establishment of Gujarat’s first multilevel bus depot.
