In a major step towards simplifying Aadhaar services, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will allow citizens to update or change their registered mobile numbers entirely online from January 28, 2026, doing away with the long-standing requirement of visiting physical enrolment centres.
With the rollout of the full version of its upgraded Aadhaar mobile application, UIDAI will enable Aadhaar holders to update their mobile numbers “anytime and anywhere” using their smartphones. Until now, mobile number updates were among the few Aadhaar-related services that mandated in-person visits to Aadhaar Seva Kendras for biometric verification, often leading to delays and inconvenience, particularly for people in remote areas.
The new mechanism will rely on a combination of Face Authentication and One-Time Password (OTP) verification. Using the phone’s camera, users will be able to authenticate their identity remotely, making the process paperless and centre-free.
