Ahmedabad airport was put on high alert on Tuesday after it received a bomb threat via email, prompting security agencies to launch an investigation. Airport authorities later filed a formal complaint in connection with the threat.
The threat was sent to the official email ID of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, leading airport and police officials to immediately step up security across the entire campus. A complaint was registered at the airport police station, and precautionary measures were intensified.
According to officials, the threatening email was sent from an unknown email ID and was received around 11.05 am on January 27. The subject line mentioned a bomb blast, and the message claimed that Ahmedabad airport was a target.
Soon after receiving the email, senior airport officials and the chief security officer took charge. An emergency meeting of the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee was held at 11.20 am and lasted about 30 minutes. After reviewing the situation, the committee termed the threat “non-specific” but ordered enhanced security checks as a precaution.
The airport’s landside security duty manager lodged a complaint against an unidentified person. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IT Act and for criminal intimidation. With the help of the cyber cell, efforts are underway to trace the sender of the email, and investigations are ongoing.
