Mt Abu freezes at –5°C as severe cold wave grips hill station

Mount Abu recorded a biting minimum temperature of –5°C on Thursday, as an intense cold wave tightened its grip on Rajasthan’s only hill station after Makar Sankranti. The extreme chill is expected to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours.

As temperatures plunged below freezing, Mount Abu witnessed a surge of tourists from Gujarat and other parts of the country, many describing the snow-like conditions as reminiscent of a “Mini Switzerland.”

The cold intensified sharply after the festival, bringing daily life to a near standstill. Dry north-easterly winds worsened conditions, leading to widespread frost formation. Frost was visible on open grounds, along the banks of Nakki Lake, on trees and leaves, and even on parked vehicles and solar panels.

Undeterred by the harsh weather, tourists gathered early in the morning near Nakki Lake to experience the rare icy spell, braving freezing temperatures for photographs and views.

Bonfires were lit outside tea stalls, hotels and restaurants as locals and visitors tried to keep warm. Shopkeepers reported increased demand for hot tea and snacks due to the severe cold.

Authorities have advised tourists to take necessary precautions and carry adequate winter clothing while visiting the hill station.

According to the Meteorological Department, cold north-easterly winds are currently affecting Gujarat as well, causing a dip in temperatures across the state. Dry weather conditions are likely to continue in the coming days.
