In a significant development for Gujarat’s legal fraternity, the Gujarat High Court has designated four prominent lawyers as senior advocates.
The decision was formalised through a notification issued on Friday, January 9, 2026, following a unanimous resolution of the full court. The resolution was adopted at a meeting held on January 8, chaired by the Chief Justice and attended by all judges of the High Court.
The designations were made under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961, read with the newly notified High Court of Gujarat (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2025. The lawyers elevated to the senior bar are Amar Niranjan Bhatt, Apurva Sharad Vakil, Megha Bhupendra Jani and Mitul Kirit Shelat.
The designation of senior advocate is a mark of distinction, awarded to members of the Bar who have demonstrated exceptional ability, standing and specialised knowledge of law. As per the notification, the designations take effect immediately from the date of issuance.
Under the Advocates Act, an advocate may be designated as a senior advocate if the Supreme Court or a High Court is of the opinion that the advocate, by virtue of ability, standing at the Bar, or special knowledge or experience in law, deserves such recognition.
The notification stated that the Chief Justice and all judges of the High Court unanimously resolved to grant the senior advocate status. The move is expected to further strengthen Gujarat’s senior bar by enhancing leadership in complex litigation and providing guidance and mentorship to younger members of the legal community.
