Dining inside a train without actually travelling may soon become a reality for Ahmedabad residents, as Western Railway is developing a rail coach restaurant at Ambli Road railway station. This is the first such initiative in the Ahmedabad division.
The restaurant is being set up inside converted railway coaches, similar to facilities already operational at Bandra Terminus, Andheri, Borivali, Ratlam and Rajkot under Western Railway.
The rail coach restaurant will operate round the clock and offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Additional facilities will include parking, parcel and take-away services, and a children’s play area, making it a family-friendly destination. The surrounding area is being landscaped with greenery, and all safety standards are being strictly followed during construction.
Ajay Solanki, PRO of Western Railway’s Ahmedabad division, said the project aims to creatively reuse railway assets while enhancing amenities for passengers and local residents. “The rail coach restaurant at Ambli Road is being developed with a modern design, attached kitchens and a multi-cuisine menu. It will provide a unique dining experience in a safe and eco-friendly environment. As there are no restaurants nearby, this facility will be especially convenient for residents in the area,” he said.
Another railway official said the restaurant will be operated by a private agency selected through a tender process. The menu will be designed to suit local tastes. Western Railway is also planning to set up similar rail coach restaurants at the circulating areas of Mehsana, Sabarmati, Bhuj and Gandhidham railway stations in the coming days.
