A wave of election enthusiasm swept through the legal fraternity across Gujarat on Friday as elections were held in around 282 Bar Associations, including the Gujarat High Court Advocates’ Association (GHCAA).
The GHCAA recorded an impressive voter turnout of nearly 80 per cent. Due to the heavy participation, polling hours were extended by two hours and continued until 7 pm. High voter turnout was also reported at other major courts in Ahmedabad. The District Bar Association registered about 82 per cent voting, the Ahmedabad Criminal Courts Bar Association saw around 60 per cent participation, while the Ahmedabad Bar Association (City Civil Court) recorded close to 55 per cent turnout.
While vote counting for most Bar Associations continued late into the night and results are expected to be declared on Saturday, the results for the Ahmedabad Bar Association (City Civil and Sessions Court) were announced late on Friday. Jagat Choksi was elected president, with Raju Bhatt as vice president. Kirti Shah was elected secretary, Pujan Pandya joint secretary, and Bela Pandya treasurer.
Anil C Kella, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Bar Council of Gujarat, said that counting for most associations began late on Friday, while counting for the Ahmedabad District Court Bar Association will begin on Saturday morning.
