The Gujarat High Court on Monday dismissed an appeal by 29 Baldevnagar (Acher) residents in Sabarmati who challenged eviction notices issued by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The eviction is part of plans to construct a 24-metre-wide road under the 1984 Town Planning (TP) scheme. Residents argued they had been long-term tenants, paying taxes and receiving utilities, and only received the eviction notice in 2025—41 years after the scheme was finalised.
The court noted that the residents lacked legal ownership of the land or structures. While they may apply for rehabilitation, the TP scheme’s implementation cannot be delayed. The plea to cancel the eviction or the scheme was rejected, citing legal precedents, allowing AMC to proceed with infrastructure work, reportedly linked to preparations for India’s 2036 Olympic bid.
