The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Saturday began demolishing illegal encroachments near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera as part of preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
The houses in Baldevnagar and Subhashnagar were located on the proposed alignment of a 24-metre-wide TP Road connecting Acher Depot to Torrent Power. Residents had received eviction notices earlier but their plea in the Gujarat High Court was rejected, clearing the way for the demolition.
Two JCBs, AMC staff, and a heavy police presence were deployed as 29 houses obstructing the project were removed. The area behind the stadium is being developed for the planned SVP Enclave, a multi-crore project.
