Ahmedabad has approval for about 1,200 speed breakers, but the city actually has nearly 4,000 — with around 2,800 allegedly built illegally by residents and societies.
While speed breakers are meant to improve safety, the unplanned construction of bumps on internal roads, main roads, and society lanes is causing frequent vehicle damage and even health problems like back and neck pain.
Experts say many of these speed breakers do not follow Indian Road Congress guidelines for height, width, or the required warning signs. Even some AMC-approved bumps lack proper signage.Official data shows that 339 new speed breakers were approved in the last 17 months.
However, illegal bumps still far outnumber the authorised ones, raising concerns about traffic safety, injuries, and poor road engineering.
