The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday, November 24, launched a major demolition drive to clear 40-year-old illegal encroachments in the Isanpur area. The action comes months after a large-scale anti-encroachment operation at Chandola Lake.
According to a media report, more than 1,000 people are currently residing on land near Isanpur Lake, allegedly occupying it illegally. To carry out the demolition, AMC deployed 20 JCB machines, over 500 municipal workers and labourers, and heavy police force to ensure law and order.
The state government and AMC have been running a campaign to revive and develop urban lakes, under which efforts to remove encroachments around water bodies have been intensified.
Earlier, on April 29, 2025, Ahmedabad witnessed its largest-ever demolition drive at Chandola Lake. In the first phase, AMC used 50 JCB machines to clear around 4,000 unfinished structures, freeing 1.50 lakh sq m of land. In the second phase, conducted on May 20, 2025, authorities removed around 8,500 unfinished structures, taking the total to over 12,000 illegal structures cleared from nearly 4 lakh sq m of land.
