Around 20 luxury hotels in Ahmedabad will soon face higher wastewater charges, as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to impose an extra fee on establishments generating more than 10 KLD (kilolitres per day) of wastewater.
The new charge will be calculated based on each hotel’s water use, at a rate of Rs 8 per KL. This amount will be added to their annual bills from 2026–27, likely increasing yearly payments by Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.
AMC introduced this fee to meet World Bank conditions for funding. Once implemented, the civic body will receive Rs 125 crore from the World Bank under a Rs 3,000-crore project aimed at building new sewage treatment plants, replacing old drainage lines and upgrading the city’s wastewater system.
Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said about 20 high-end hotels — including properties like Taj Skyline, ITC Narmada and Hyatt Regency — discharge more than 10 KLD of wastewater daily and will now be required to pay the additional charge for using the city’s drainage network.
He added that the move is intended to comply with World Bank guidelines and improve Ahmedabad’s wastewater management infrastructure.
