A health screening conducted on Friday delivered alarming findings: 29% of the 2,221 people tested had high blood sugar, while 35% were diagnosed with hypertension.
In total, 644 individuals showed elevated sugar levels—nearly one in three—while 772 were found with high blood pressure.AMA president Dr Jignesh Shah called the results “worrying,” stressing the urgent need for regular diabetes checks and greater lifestyle awareness.
Dr Banshi Saboo, chair of the IDF South-East Asia region, noted that most participants were above 40, a group more prone to risk factors, and warned against applying the figures to the entire city.
Even so, he pointed out that Ahmedabad’s diabetes prevalence—estimated at 15–18%—is already higher than the national average of 11.4%.The screening drive, organised for World Diabetes Day, was held across 103 centres jointly by the Ahmedabad Medical Association, AMC, IDF SEA and AFPA.
Thousands participated at locations including gardens, clinics and AMC health facilities. Mayor Pratibha Jain, MLA Hasmukh Patel and AMC CMO Dr Bhavin Solanki attended the event at Parimal Garden.
