Ahmedabad is witnessing a sharp rise in high-speed road accidents, with overspeeding emerging as the leading cause. According to a recent study, around 20 people are hospitalised every day due to road injuries across the city.
The Sarkhej–Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, especially the stretch from Sanathal to Vaishnodevi Circle, has turned into a high-risk zone, recording nearly 10 accidents daily. Despite CCTV surveillance and awareness drives, rash driving and speeding remain unchecked.
To handle the growing number of crashes, Ahmedabad Police have established two dedicated traffic stations—SG-1 and SG-2—for the highway.
Other danger zones include Outer Ring Road and fast-developing areas such as Ramol, Odhav, Khokhra, Nikol, Narol, Sarkhej, and Vasna, all showing rising fatalities.
Alarming figures from key traffic divisions (2025 so far)
- I Division (Amraiwadi–Odhav): 67 deaths, 97 serious injuries
- K Division (Danilimda–Narol): 39 deaths, 50 serious injuries
- M Division (Vasna–Sarkhej–Ellisbridge): 30 deaths, 55 serious injuries
- L Division (Sabarmati–Ranip–Riverfront): 30 deaths, 60 serious injuries
While the total number of accidents in Ahmedabad has dropped by 8–10%, the fatality rate has risen by 5–6%, raising concern among officials.
Interestingly, Old City areas such as Kalupur, Shahpur, and Karanj—with narrow, congested roads—report far fewer accidents, suggesting that wider roads encourage speeding.

Police urge self-discipline
Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police N. N. Chaudhary stressed that while infrastructure and enforcement are improving, responsible driving remains the only lasting solution.
“Driving fast may seem harmless, but one moment of negligence can lead to a lifetime of regret,” he warned.
