The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued 24-hour eviction notices to 102 shop owners operating on Kalupur Bridge, citing safety concerns over the deteriorating structures. The notice, signed by the Deputy Estate Officer (Central Zone), was served on October 10.
According to AMC officials, the shops—constructed over 75 years ago—have become structurally unstable. Portions of the building reportedly collapsed on October 8, prompting the civic body to order an immediate evacuation to avert any mishaps.
Shops built for Partition refugees
These shops were originally allotted to migrants displaced during the India–Pakistan Partition, helping them rebuild their livelihoods. Many traders said they have been paying rent and dues regularly for decades.
“We have been running our businesses here for generations,” said one shopkeeper. “The notice came suddenly—without giving us time to prepare or find another place.”
Traders term eviction ‘unfair’ before festive season
The eviction order has left traders distressed, especially as it comes just days before Diwali, a crucial period for sales. They fear heavy financial losses if forced to shut down abruptly.
“This is our busiest time of the year,” said another trader. “If we close now, it will destroy our festive earnings.”
No clarity on relocation or compensation
While AMC officials insist the move is driven by public safety concerns, traders claim they have received no assurance about relocation or compensation. The corporation has yet to announce any rehabilitation plan for affected shop owners.
Traders continue to appeal for government intervention, urging the authorities to find a solution that ensures both safety and livelihood protection.
