As Diwali nears, the Gujarat State GST (SGST) department has launched a sweeping crackdown on firecracker traders suspected of large-scale tax evasion and overpricing.
On Friday, SGST teams began survey operations at more than 50 businesses across the state, with major raids in Ahmedabad and Surat. Officials are scrutinizing billing records, stock registers, and accounts to ensure traders aren’t inflating prices or dodging taxes.
Raids in key cities
In Surat and Navsari, multiple traders were raided for allegedly using fake GST invoices and manipulating billing. Documents and records were seized from business premises and godowns for further examination.
In Himatnagar, officers searched the home and business of trader Gurumukhdas, as well as godowns near Tejpur storing large quantities of firecrackers. Similar operations were carried out in Gandhidham, where the premises of businessmen Haresh Ramvani and Bharat Ramvani were targeted.
Widespread panic among traders
Preliminary findings suggest tax evasion worth several crores. The action has triggered panic among traders statewide, many confirming that officials are closely inspecting their records and stock.
This drive follows earlier checks conducted during Navratri after reports of overcharging. SGST officials have indicated that more raids may follow in the days leading up to Diwali to ensure full compliance.
