Malaysia courts Amdavadi travellers with culture, cuisine and comfort

At the Global Tourism Meet 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia showcased itself as a vibrant mix of heritage, hospitality, and modern comfort — with a special focus on attracting Indian and Gujarati tourists.

The three-day event, hosted by Tourism Malaysia from October 1 to 3 at the World Trade Centre, brought together over 400 Malaysian sellers and 600 international buyers. Supported by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air, the meet marked a key step toward the country’s goal of welcoming 47 million international visitors during Visit Malaysia 2026.

India remains one of Malaysia’s biggest tourism markets, contributing significantly to its 38 million visitors in 2024. Officials said Gujarati travellers, especially from Ahmedabad, are showing rising interest in culturally rich destinations like Malacca, which shares deep historical ties with the community.

“Many Gujaratis visit the Shree Ambaji Temple in Malacca during major festivals, and we’ve introduced special packages for these occasions,” said Tourism Malaysia officials.

To appeal to Amdavadi preferences, Malaysia is promoting experiential travel—heritage walks, eco-tours, wellness retreats, and local craft experiences. For couples planning destination weddings, the country offers luxury resorts, beachside venues, and Indian cuisine “that feels like home—with an exotic twist.”

Understanding the importance of food for Gujarati tourists, Malaysia is also expanding its network of vegetarian and Jain-friendly restaurants, and encouraging hotels to employ Indian chefs, especially in Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism Malaysia is further inviting Gujarati filmmakers to explore its scenic locations, backed by the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS), which supports foreign productions with permits, logistics, and financial incentives.

With a blend of cultural familiarity and international allure, Malaysia is positioning itself as a seamless, soulful, and welcoming destination for Amdavadi travellers.
