Starting 8 October 2025, users in India will be able to approve UPI payments using facial recognition and fingerprints, according to people familiar with the matter, Reuters reported.
The authentication will use biometric data linked to Aadhaar, India’s unique identification system. This comes after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently permitted alternative methods for digital payment authentication, moving away from the traditional numeric PIN system.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, plans to demonstrate the new biometric feature at the ongoing Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai.
NPCI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
