A new cyclone, named ‘Shakti’, has formed over the Arabian Sea and is currently moving towards Oman, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. However, the system is expected to take a U-turn around October 6 and head towards Gujarat, bringing light to moderate rainfall along the coastal regions.
Authorities have reported strong sea currents near Diu, Veraval, and Dwarka, prompting them to remain on high alert. The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to expected rough conditions and strong winds over the next few days.
Rainfall Forecast Across Gujarat
Gusty winds and light showers are expected in several parts of Gujarat over the next five days. Certain areas in Saurashtra and South Gujarat may see heavy rainfall. On October 8, districts including Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain.
Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Movement and Strength
As of 11:30 am IST on October 5, Cyclone Shakti was located around 210 km southeast of Oman, moving west-southwest at about 15 km/h. It is expected to continue this path until Monday morning, gradually intensifying into a cyclonic storm before taking a U-turn towards the central Arabian Sea. By the afternoon of October 7, it is likely to weaken into a depression.
Origin of the Name ‘Shakti’
The name ‘Shakti’, meaning strength or power in Tamil, was given by Sri Lanka as part of a regional cyclone naming system introduced in 2024. Names are chosen to be short, easy to pronounce, non-offensive, and unique.
As Shakti gains momentum, coastal districts of Gujarat remain on alert, with local authorities preparing for potential rain and sea disturbances in the coming days.
