On the eve of a potentially stormy annual general meeting, the rift within the elite Ellisbridge Gymkhana has deepened. A dissenting member has written to the club president demanding that Saturday’s AGM be called off, terming it illegal.
In his letter, the member alleged that the managing committee had acted without authority by communicating with the government on surrendering the club’s prime Law Garden land in exchange for a new plot in Ognaj. He argued that the club’s constitution does not permit such a move and accused the committee of parting with funds by depositing money in the government treasury. He insisted that since members were not provided with mandatory documents, the AGM must be cancelled.
Meanwhile, in a significant shift, the club’s management has written to the Collector, seeking changes to the controversial clause. The letter now states that members want to retain the existing premises and instead use the Ognaj plot as “additional land for expansion,” citing the club’s growing membership.
The reversal comes after criticism that the committee had concealed details of the surrender clause, which had earlier triggered uproar in meetings.
