The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Thursday carried out a large-scale demolition drive to clear decades-old encroachments along the Sabarmati riverbank.
Backed by over 500 police personnel, bulldozers demolished more than 700 makeshift houses in areas including GEB, Pethapur, and Charedi. Residents had been living on government land for years before the crackdown.
The action follows recent state-led anti-encroachment drives in Ahmedabad and other districts. However, the move has triggered debate among locals, who question why similar steps aren’t being taken against illegal constructions in Gandhinagar’s sectors and main roads, such as Sector 24, Sector 13, and Sector 20.
