In line with Gujarat’s vision of hosting the 2036 Olympics, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the newly built Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad on Sunday.The international-level facility, developed at a cost of ₹825 crore, is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s sporting ambitions.
Shah said Ahmedabad has a strong chance of being cleared to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and expressed hope that the city would also host the International Competition for Police and Fire Services in 2029. Reaffirming the government’s commitment to bringing the 2036 Olympics to Ahmedabad, he called sports the “soul of India” and underlined the transformation of the country’s sports sector in the past decade.
Highlighting world-class
infrastructure such as Narendra Modi Stadium, Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, and now the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Shah said Ahmedabad is on track to become the nation’s sports capital. He noted that India’s sports budget has surged from ₹1,643 crore a decade ago to ₹5,300 crore, while initiatives like Khelo India Games, Para Games, and Winter Games have built a stronger sporting ecosystem.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said Gujarat is ready to host the Olympic Games, adding that the new complex will serve as a vital platform for state athletes. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also praised the country’s new sports policy, built on five pillars including global platforms for athletes, economic development through sports, and integration of sports with education.
Separately, in Gandhinagar, Shah addressed the 5th All-India Rajbhasha Conference, urging children to speak in their mother tongue. He also inaugurated a girls’ hostel at Sardardham and launched a daughter adoption scheme.
