Mobile service providers continue to operate 2,200 towers across Ahmedabad even as the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) struggles to recover 17 crore in pending rent.
At a recent standing committee meeting, officials failed to clarify the dues owed for underground cables or provide details on the total number of towers and the revenue they generate.
AMC has now decided to enforce provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, allowing mobile towers only at designated locations. A proposal has also been cleared to permit tower foundations and superstructures across the city as part of telecom infrastructure expansion.
Under the new framework, rent will be charged annually at 15% of the jantri value, replacing the earlier system of collecting 40% of the jantri value as a one-time 20-year lease.
