The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed universities and colleges to create awareness about the health risks of excessive sugar and oil consumption by installing ‘Oil & Sugar Boards’—digital or static—in common areas such as canteens.
The directive follows a Ministry of Health advisory highlighting obesity as a major public health concern linked to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Similar measures have already been adopted by CBSE and the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) in schools.
The UGC has further urged institutions to promote healthy habits by offering nutritious food options, reducing sugary drinks and high-fat snacks, encouraging physical activity, and organizing regular nutrition and fitness workshops.
“All higher education institutions must implement these measures in letter and spirit to build a healthier, more resilient generation,” the UGC circular stated.
