An inspection by Ahmedabad Police has revealed that several housing societies employ security guards over 60 years of age, in violation of rules requiring guards to be physically fit and supported by valid medical certificates. Police said many security firms collude with doctors to issue fake certificates, enabling unlawful appointments.
Authorities have warned that societies also share responsibility and must demand replacements if agencies assign elderly or unfit guards, to avoid compromising residents’ safety.
The inspection further exposed large-scale exploitation of guards. Agencies charge societies upwards of 15,000 per guard but pay them only 8,000–10,000 through vouchers, while making them work over 12 hours a day. Police termed this a serious lapse and indicated strict action against defaulting operators.
