The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Gujarat over the next three days.
IMD scientist Abhimanyu Chauhan said on Sunday that northern and southern districts have already recorded extreme rainfall in the past 24 hours. “Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for multiple districts for the next 24–48 hours. Rainfall is expected to reduce by day three, with only isolated heavy showers. From day four onwards, only scattered rain is likely,” he said.
So far, Gujarat has received 1,009 mm of rain this monsoon season, which is 22% above normal, according to IMD data.
Meanwhile, Vadodara has been hit by flooding after heavy rainfall over the last three days caused the Vishwamitri River to swell. The main road to Koteshwar, Kansa Residency, and Samridhi Residency in Vadsar area was inundated, leaving around 1,000 residents stranded.
Municipal councillor Ketan Patel said relief supplies, including food packets, are being distributed. “Last year, water levels touched 23 feet, but this year the damage is less due to ongoing work on the Vishwamitri,” he added.
