Ahmedabad is reporting over 10 dog bite cases daily, with the city’s stray dog population now estimated at more than two lakh.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which once operated four sterilisation teams handling around 150 dogs a day, has reduced the number to just two. Now, only 35–40 dogs are being sterilised daily—far too few to control the rising numbers.
A pet dog registration drive launched in January 2025 has also seen poor response. Of the city’s 50,000 estimated pet dogs, only 18,376 have been registered, less than 20%.
Opposition criticism
Leader of Opposition Shehzad Khan Pathan slammed AMC during Friday’s general board meeting. “This is the state’s biggest municipal corporation, yet it cannot handle even this basic issue. Citizens’ safety is at risk,” he said, citing a recent Supreme Court directive on stray dog control.
