291 athletes from 30 nations to compete at Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Aug 24–31
According to a media report, ahmedabad is set to host the Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships 2025, beginning August 24 at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.
This is the first time Gujarat will stage the prestigious international event, which runs till August 31.A total of 291 athletes from 30 Commonwealth nations will vie for 144 medals across Youth, Junior and Senior categories in both men’s and women’s divisions.
The event also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Alongside the athletes, about 100 team officials, 50 international technical experts and 20 senior dignitaries from global federations will be present. India will field 37 lifters out of the 91 competing.The opening ceremony will be held on August 24 at 5:30 pm, followed by competitions from August 25 to 30.
Supported by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of Gujarat, the championship will also spotlight Ahmedabad’s culture and hospitality.Among the biggest draws will be Olympic silver medallist and Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu. “It is a proud moment for India and for Gujarat,” said IWLF president Sahdev Yadav.
“We are confident the event will showcase world-class competition and inspire the next generation of lifters.”No-show from neighboursThe Indian Weightlifting Federation confirmed that Pakistan and Bangladesh will not participate. Pakistan has been suspended following doping violations, while Bangladesh has opted out voluntarily.
