Following the murder of a Class 10 student outside Seventh Day Adventist School in Khokhra, Ahmedabad’s District Education Officer (DEO) Rohit M. Chaudhari has directed schools across the city to step up security. Officials have begun conducting random bag checks and banned sharp objects on campus.
On Thursday, inspectors visited several schools and checked students’ bags. At one institution, the pointed tip of a geometry compass was found in a child’s bag, after which the student was counselled. Some schools have since prohibited students from carrying geometry instruments altogether.
The DEO office has also convened safety meetings with teachers in areas such as Maninagar and plans to meet over 50 school administrators in the coming days. Meanwhile, parents are being urged to give statements in connection with the Khokhra incident—though more than 20 have cooperated, many remain hesitant out of fear.
The incident took place on August 19, when a Class 8 student fatally attacked a Class 10 student with a sharp weapon outside Seventh Day Adventist School. The victim succumbed to injuries a day later, triggering violent protests by parents, locals, and members of the Sindhi community. The school building was vandalised, and staff members were assaulted.
Since then, in-person classes at the school have been suspended. Online teaching has also stalled as fearful teachers have yet to return to work.
