Gujarat HC Rejects Interim Relief Plea by Food Vendors Near H L College, CEPT

Gujarat HC Rejects Interim Relief Plea by Food Vendors Near H L College, CEPT

Food vendors operating near H L College and CEPT University in Ahmedabad had approached the Gujarat High Court, challenging the removal of their stalls. However, Justice Niral R Mehta refused to grant them interim relief at this stage.

According to a media report, during the hearing, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) informed the court that the stalls are located on a 60-foot-wide road near the busy Commerce Six Roads junction, which is a critical traffic zone.

AMC argued that the stalls contribute to frequent traffic congestion, as they encroach upon footpaths and their customers park vehicles along the roadside, creating further disruption. The civic body also cited the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which prohibits cooking on public roads — a rule the vendors are allegedly violating.

Highlighting its broader drive to eliminate encroachments across the city, AMC urged the court not to permit these vendors to resume operations at the disputed location.

After hearing both sides, the court scheduled the next hearing later this month and directed the vendors to refrain from setting up their stalls until a final decision is reached.
